A Battery-Friendly SMS App: How to Cut Background Drain

· 1 min read

An SMS app kicks in dozens of times a day, but designed well its effect on your battery is almost invisible. Designed badly, it becomes a constant background leak.

What drains the battery most?

How does a battery-friendly SMS app work?

  1. Event-driven: the system wakes the app when a message arrives; when the work is done the app sleeps. There is no always-running service.
  2. Scheduled jobs are batched: rule updates and cleanup happen a few times a day, when the system finds it convenient and together with other jobs.
  3. Postponed on low battery: below 15% or in battery-saver mode, work that needs the network is postponed.
  4. Almost no data when nothing changed: the app asks the server “my version is this”; if nothing changed, the answer is a few bytes.
  5. Filtering on the device: rules are evaluated locally, so no network is needed for each message.

How does HiSMS do it?

HiSMS has no service, no wake lock and no constant network listening. Rule sync runs every 12 hours and cleanup every 6, both only when the battery isn’t low. In battery saver, it doesn’t reach the server when a message arrives; the check is done later when the battery allows.
